Begijnhof Brugge

The Begijnhof is among the most quietly monumental sites in Bruges: a walled community of whitewashed houses set around a central lawn and canal, founded for religious laywomen in the thirteenth century and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Van Neste's painting captures the enclosure's particular stillness.

Rather than dramatising the scene, the artist lets the architecture do the work: repeated gables and steady horizontals give the composition its calm, almost monastic rhythm.
