Geo Rousseau, Belgium, 1925. Oil on canvas depicting a snow-covered bridge over one of Bruges' canals.
Brug in de Sneeuw
Painted in 1925, Brug in de Sneeuw ("Bridge in the Snow") sets a familiar Bruges motif into an unfamiliar season. Snow simplifies the city's usual palette of brick red and canal green into a study of near-monochrome, broken only by the dark structure of the bridge.
Rousseau's winter scenes are a less common register within Belgian cityscape painting of the period, and the dated inscription anchors this piece firmly in the mid-1920s.
