Leo Van der Smissen, Belgium. Oil on canvas.
De Dijver
De Dijver takes its subject from one of the most painted stretches of water in Bruges: the tree-lined canal running past the stepped-gable facades between the Markt and the Groeningemuseum. Van der Smissen works in the long tradition of Bruges cityscape painting, using the canal's still surface to double the architecture above it.
The palette stays close to observed daylight -- warm ochres and reds in the brickwork, cooler greens reflected from the trees, unified by the characteristic soft grey Flemish sky.
